What Have You Read Lately ~ Dog Years

Dog Years by Mark Doty.

Award-winning memoirist and poet Mark Doty explores, with compassion and intelligence, the complicated, loving territory inhabited by devoted dogs and their loyal humans. In 1994, when the author’s longtime lover was dying of AIDS, beloved pet Arden kept the surviving partner afloat. A new adoptee, the rambunctious Beau, in his “sloppy dog way,” becomes a part of the tribe and carries some of the burden of grief. Doty says Beau “carried something else for me too, which was my will to live.”

Dog Years shows both the abundant pleasures and unavoidable heartbreak of loving people, life, and especially dogs. As someone who is in love with a dog, I found this book to be and oracle of truth. For those who have yet to love a dog, it will be a revelation.  ~  Ann Patchett

What Have You Read Lately? ~ Oogy

dog wash in EvergreenOogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love

By Larry Levin

When Oogy was 10 weeks old and weighed 20 pounds, he was tied to a stake and used as bait for a Pit Bull in a dog fighting operation. But Oogy’s story does not end there. An Argentine Dogo, Oogy was rescued during a police raid from the cage where he had been left to bleed to death by the horrible people running the operation. He was rushed into emergency surgery, and saved by a veterinary surgeon that refused to let him die.

It was in this hospital that Oogy met Larry Levin and his family. His overflowing joy and love swept this man and his sons off their feet. In his book, Larry describes how, through Oogy, he learned to deal with his own emotional scars and the effect Oogy seems to have on other wounded people. “If this dog can go through the hell he did and emerge capable of giving and generating as much love as he does, so can they,” says Levin.

The Art of Racing in the Rain

dog wash in EvergreenFrom the book “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein:

In Mongolia, when a dog dies, he is buried high in the hills so people cannot walk on his grave. The dog’s master whispers into the dog’s ear his wishes that the dog will return as a man in his next life. Then his tail is cut off and put beneath his head, and a piece of meat or fat is placed in his mouth to sustain his soul on its journey; before he is reincarnated, the dog’s soul is freed to travel the land, to run across the high desert plains for as long as it would like.

I learned that from a program on the National Geographic channel, so I believe it is true. Not all dogs return as men, they say; only those who are ready.

I am ready.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life…as only a dog could tell it.

The Soul of the Home

I love cats because I love my home and after a while they become its visible soul.” ~ Jean Cocteau

A house becomes a home when cats reside there. The Evergreen Animal Protective League has several cats and kittens available for adoption. Here are some of the sweet felines currently on their website.

Smokey is a soft and silky short haired grey girl with a small white dot on her chest. She is also declawed. She has a wonderful silky coat and loves to be petted. Visit the EAPL for more information about how to meet her.

Rosebud is a very shy girl who is about two-and-a-half years old. She’s been around young children, dogs and other cats, and is slowly learning to trust. Even though she seems shy and hard to get to know, once you have her in your arms, Rosebud will reward you with lots of purrs and love. She is a long-haired black and white Tuxedo and she would love to set up a meeting with you.

Panda’s old owners have recently deployed and were heartbroken having to relinquish her. Panda was not happy about leaving her home, but has quickly acclimated and is waiting patiently for her new forever home.

Time at the Salon

We bathe and brush our beautiful Collie mix, but about mid-summer, his coat becomes unmanageable. He is shedding his winter fur, and it becomes matted and really kind of nasty. He picks up sticks and leaves in his fur, some of which get caught next to his skin and poke him. It’s at this point we admit that we can’t handle it ourselves – it’s time for a professional grooming.

Groomers not only wash and brush your dog’s coat, but a groomer can also get rid of up to 90% of the fur your pooch is shedding. They also trim the nails, and do a variety of other things that improve the comfort and health of your dog. In our situation, we find that once that undercoat is thinned out, we can maintain our pup’s gorgeous fur as his new winter coat grows in.

Dogma Pet Supply and Dog Wash™ has a self-wash facility for those who want to bathe their dog themselves, but simply don’t want the mess at home. Dogma™ also offers full-service professional grooming. Before the first snow flies, maybe you should make time for your fur-kid at the groomers, and help him get ready for that new winter coat!
