Maine Coon Cats

The worlds biggest purebred cat is the Maine Coon cat. The Maine Coon is the largest breed registered by the Cat Fanciers Association and male Maine Coons can weigh as much as thirty-five pounds. They are America’s only natural, long-haired native breed (meaning they have no exotic wild-species bloodlines). Their coat has three separate layers which kept them warm in the cold New England winters. They have a massive tail which serves more than one function. The length gives them balance and agility at high speeds and while climbing. While sitting, the 8-inch circumference fur on the tail – called a brush – wraps around the legs and stomach to conserve body heat.

The world record holder for longest domestic cat is a Maine Coon measuring over four feet long from nose to tip of tail. Knowing how heavy my ten-pound kitty feels after she’s been on my lap for a while, I can only imagine cuddling up with this furry baby. And Maine Coons are sweet, intelligent animals that love to cuddle. Who needs an electric blanket this winter? Just bring home a Maine Coon.

Teacup Yorkies

Teacup Yorkies are a toy-sized Yorkshire Terrier, and weigh up to seven pounds. They have the traditional blue and tan Yorkshire coloring.

The Teacup Yorkie is happiest sitting on its owner’s lap all day and is an extremely affectionate breed.  It has been said that a Yorkshire Terrier requires more human companionship and attention than any other breed. They have a dose of attitude combined with a bright and playful nature. They are also intelligent and lively making them quick to learn but occasionally willful which can make training a challenge. Because of their temperament, training must consist of a lot of praise combined with consistency and firmness.

The Yorkie can be territorial and needs its ‘space’ respected. For this reason, it is best to not have a Yorkie in a house with young children although older children are okay if they are taught to treat the dog well. Because of their small size, they require minimal exercise. They love short walks and are well-suited for apartments and other small living spaces.

If you have the time to devote to them, Teacup Yorkies make sweet and loyal companions.

Have You Been Chosen?

Do we choose our pets, or do they choose us? When you wander through a website like the Evergreen Animal Protective League planning to adopt a pet, sometimes the look in an animal’s eyes calls to you, and you feel like you’ve been chosen. No matter how long you look at available animals, you keep coming back to this one, and you sense when you meet them there will be a connection. So you make the appointment, and when you walk in the door they look at you as if to say, “I’ve been waiting for you. Let’s go home.”

Here are three loving boys waiting to meet you at the EAPL. They’d love for you to meet their friends, too. One of them may just choose you to be his very own.

This is Patches, a six-month-old, neutered puppy looking for his forever home. As a border-collie mix, he is a very playful, happy dog. He might just make your home complete.

No one knows how long Diego, an 8-year old male Chihuahua spent as a stray, having to scrabble for every meal, and afraid of people. Now that he is comfortable, it turns out he is a loveable, mellow guy.  He is just a sweet middle-aged gent looking for a safe place to retire. If you’re looking for a snuggler, Diego may just be for you.

Hatch is a neutered male, about one-year-old. He was found, very scared, walking along a highway. It was clear he had been on his own for a while. While at first he was timid, he soon became a lovable, jolly fellow whose goal was to give kisses and get as close as physically possible. With a little love and patience he will be a wonderful companion!
