Training Tips ~ Slow Down, Fido!

dog wash in EvergreenDoes your dog eat too fast? If so, this can be a problem for a variety of reasons. Your pooch could choke, or simply take in too much air when he gulps his food down, causing gas. It can even lead to bloat, a potentially deadly disease that is seen mostly in large, deep-chested breeds. Teaching your dog to eat slower is an important issue. A dog who eats more slowly is ultimately healthier and just plain feels better. So, how can you slow your furry friend down? Here are some things to try.

Provide a spot away from the hustle and bustle of your home. It is vital to provide a quiet environment in which the dog can eat peacefully and quietly. A quiet room, a secluded corner or even a crate may help the dog relax and feel less compelled to eat fast, especially a dog who lives in a multi-dog home.

If this doesn’t seem to help, you can hand-feed your dog one kibble at a time. Some owners have also found it beneficial to spread the food on the floor in a trail so the dog will have to eat a kibble every few steps. This, of course, doesn’t work with everyone’s lifestyle, but it can help your pooch feel calmer and slow down.

Another thing to try is adding large stones to your dog’s dish. Make sure they are FAR TOO BIG to swallow. Your dog will have to work around the stones, and the result will be eating slower. You can even purchase food bowls that teach your dog to eat slower, like these.

Keep trying different methods until you find something that works. You’ll have a happier dog as a result.

Expert Advice

dog wash in EvergreenSometimes, we’re just not sure what to feed our dog. We want the best for her, healthful food that will give her vitality and long life. But we also look for something that she’ll love to eat, something we don’t have to coax her to eat, and something that’s convenient and simple for us. so we can be consistent with it.

Then there are the times when our pooch has been eating great, and suddenly develops a finickiness that we can’t get her to shake. Or our pet is simply getting older or has gained some weight or is less active than before, and we’re not sure how or even if we should change her diet.
