Hero Dogs – Sadie

dog wash in EvergreenThe American Humane Association’s annual Hero Dog Awards honor those dogs used in service or those that have done extraordinary things. A Westminster, Colorado dog named Sadie was a 2011 recipient of this honor. A nationally certified accelerant detection K-9, Sadie works in the Major Crimes Unit of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. She has worked approximately 400 fires, and has assisted in cases resulting in numerous arrests, including high-profile arson/homicide cases where her nose has detected critical evidence for collection and prosecution. She has never lost in court. Sadie has worked in extreme environments (high-rise buildings, collapsing structures, snow-covered mountains) and never missed a call to duty. She has an incredibly friendly demeanor and conducts approximately 50 demonstrations a year to promote fire safety and fire prevention. Sadie is truly an ambassador for all working dogs, and was more than deserving of this national honor.

What Have You Read Lately ~ Amazing Gracie

Amazing Gracie by Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff

Gracie was a deaf and partially blind albino Great Dane with a delicate constitution and an extreme dislike for commercial dog food. Dan is the man who adopts her, the loneliest puppy in the litter, and because of her refusal to eat teaches himself to cook and within three days begins baking the dog treats that marks the birth of Three Dog Bakery. Dan and his friend Mark save Gracie, but Gracie saves them, too, teaching them the real meaning of happiness.

What Have You Read Lately ~ Dog Years

Dog Years by Mark Doty.

Award-winning memoirist and poet Mark Doty explores, with compassion and intelligence, the complicated, loving territory inhabited by devoted dogs and their loyal humans. In 1994, when the author’s longtime lover was dying of AIDS, beloved pet Arden kept the surviving partner afloat. A new adoptee, the rambunctious Beau, in his “sloppy dog way,” becomes a part of the tribe and carries some of the burden of grief. Doty says Beau “carried something else for me too, which was my will to live.”

Dog Years shows both the abundant pleasures and unavoidable heartbreak of loving people, life, and especially dogs. As someone who is in love with a dog, I found this book to be and oracle of truth. For those who have yet to love a dog, it will be a revelation.  ~  Ann Patchett
